Strandkanten is a newly built residential area south of Tromsö city centre. Lighting is used to create an attractive environment for residents and visitors in the often-harsh climate.
The light marks a natural transition between the area’s public streets, semi-private courtyards and private homes. General lighting gives the main streets character. In the smaller streets, courtyards and playgrounds, lighting is integrated in benches, balustrades, greenhouses and screen walls, highlighting details to create a more intimate atmosphere.
Lighting design was included in all the phases of the planning process, from a strategic design on a general level to planning permission and detailed design, with realisation in 2009.
